J Russell Green River Works 12.25" Slicer Carbon Steel Ebony Turners Falls Mass 1870s-1900s

J Russell Green River Works 12.25" Slicer Carbon Steel Ebony Turners Falls Mass 1870s-1900s
Refurbished J Russell Green River Works 12.25" carbon steel slicer made in Turners Falls, Mass, with a hand forged, after drop forged, and hand ground blade (with small acid etched markings post Greenfield), brazed iron ferrule, and ebony handle. This knife shows both French and English influences and would have been for carving large beef roasts which were popular in the late 19th century.
The blade would have had a slight bullnose tip, which has been re-ground, and the narrow, pointed, saber-style birds' head is the English design reference (lots of Sheffielders worked for Russell), and the French influence in the Nogent / Cuisine Massif handle style.
