J Russell 6.5" Butcher Carbon Steel Cocobolo & Pewter 1880s-1920s
Made by the J Russell Green River Co. at their Turners Falls Mass. factory (after beginning and operating in Greenfield from 1834 on) with an acid etched diamond logo dating the knife to 1880 at earliest.
Blade is hand forged with a tapered tang and deep fullered spine, this is a continuation of a knife long in production at J Russell for the Western US market. This model was a modified butcher knife but was used by hunters and in the Western expansion as an all around belt knife.
J Russell became the US's largest knifemaker in the late 19th century and had many hits and misses financially over the years, knives made for the westward expansion and later pocket knives were what ensured their survival through difficult times
This knife has been sharpened in some but not as much as most that turn up, the cast pewter bolster and buttcap are a nice bonus on this one.
6.5" blade, 11.15" overall
